| Tweaking Brausch\\\' Munius Article Moderation Scrip
by Michael Umbra
The James D. Brausch Munius Article Directory Software PHP scripts are a pretty slick article gathering mechanism to get content from others for your e-commerce or other website. But there are few rough edges, which prompted a few tweaks to the PHP code.
One of them was derived as follows: When a contributor submits an article, he is supposed to select an appropriate category from the drop-down \\\"Article Category\\\" select menu on the submission form. But generally, they just leave it as whatever the default is -- usually just \\\"General\\\".
Then, when you go to moderate, and you want to accept the article, and want to put it into a more appropriate category, you have to manually type something in. You have to remember all the category items and their exact spellings. If you type in a category incorrectly, it won\\\'t show in ANY category to users; it will show only to you when in moderation mode. This showed the need for a drop-down select menu in the moderating (article reviewing) page also.
You will find in the Munius script \\\"submitarticle.php\\\" the Category menu that contributors see and use. (Lines 21-37 of the original Brausch script.)
Copying that code into \\\"reviewarticle.php\\\" and making a few modifications to that gets and displays what the contributor originally selected, then allows the moderator to select either that or a new category. (The code linked to below replaces lines 42-45 of the original Brausch script in \\\"reviewarticle.php\\\".)
The PHP script code for the tweak is at http://www.e-commerce-biz.com/code/munius-select-menu.txt Also see http://www.e-commerce-biz.com/ Munius PHP
Michael Umbra wants quality content for his sites, not junk. If you do, also, the Munius traffic generator script is for you. Visitors can create articles for you which you can just accept and add to your site in an instant, or edit them first. Or, if not suitable, you can reject them in an instant. | COMMENTS Want Better Page Rankings? Add an Article Archive.
by Art Sipros
When you submit promotional articles to ezines or newsletters using Artemis Pro ( http://www.bean-d.com/ab/artemispro.htm ) or some other service, you should also make sure to archive the articles on one or more of your information sites. You should archive each article on a separate page. And, on each page, in the navigation bar, you should include a link to an index page which lists and links to all your archived articles.
Here are six reasons: Read and heed.
1. It adds content to your site. The search engines love content. They will send visitors directly to your article pages. Your navigation bar will give those visitors a chance to visit the other parts of your site - including the part that has your advertisment to your sales page site.
2. When people find your site, they will be more likely to bookmark it and return.
3. It gives people an idea of what they will receive if they sign up for your newsletter. A higher percentage of people will sign up if you have an article archive.
4. Your articles can be a source of more publicity for you if you have a large selection of articles that you can encourage others to reprint... giving you credit. Use a notice similar to this: \\\"This article is furnished courtesy of http://www.e-commerce-biz.com/ - Reprint permission is granted on condition that you kindly include the author information and this notice.\\\"
5. You should also solicit articles from other authors. More authors will submit articles if they know you will be archiving them on your site.
6. As mentioned above, search engines like lots of content. It is possible that some search engines will drop sites that are low on content. Your article archive will better assure your status as a content site and to stay indexed.
If you haven\\\'t yet read \\\"A Tale Of Two Sites\\\", please look it up on jamesbrausch.com. It explains the difference between your sales sites (which should be optimized to sell) and your information sites which should be optimized for traffic - especially traffic from search engines. It also explains how to get the traffic from your information sites to your sales page sites without compromising the mission of either site.
It looks to Art Sipros that James D. Brausch has a good claim for an 1875% improvement in the number of search result links to articles that you send out, when you use his Artemis Pro article submission software. Check it out here: http://www.bean-d.com/ab/artemispro.htm Artemis Pro Sof

| COMMENTS Worthwhile? Forget It? 5-Minute Marketing Research
by Mark Reserfol
My Internet market research methodology takes about five minutes. Here\\\'s the step-by-step plan:
1. Boil your idea down to a single word.
Everyone hates this, but it gets pretty easy after awhile. With very few exceptions, any product/service can be boiled down to a single word. I know it\\\'ll be too broad for what you actually want to sell, but humor me for a minute and do it. Can you only get down to two words? I\\\'ll betcha one of those words is an adjective and the other a noun. Just drop the adjective. The noun is your single word for this exercise. If you already have a successful site, boil it down to a single word too. It\\\'ll be useful for comparison later in this process. That might have used up your first minute. Let\\\'s get to the next step.
2. Determine a \\\"demand number\\\" for your word.
The goal of this five-minute exercise to come up with a number that expresses the supply/demand characteristics of the general market you are considering. This first number is going to express the amount of \\\"demand\\\" there is for the idea expressed by the word you picked. How do we assign this number? What if we can find out how many times a keyword has been searched on a major search engine in the prior month? Well; of course we can do just that. There are several PPC search engines that have keyword suggestion tools. These tools tell you how many times a particular word has been searched in the prior month. Pick your favorite PPC search engine and go enter the above word into the keyword suggestion tool. Write down the number of searches for your word. Do the same for the word you came up with to describe your successful site. We\\\'ll call this the \\\"demand\\\" number. Only three minutes to go... better hurry to the next step.
3. Determine a \\\"supply/profitability\\\" number for your word.
In step #2, we might have picked \\\"joke\\\" (the fifth most popular keyword search on the Internet at times). Most of us know that people searching for jokes aren\\\'t really interested in buying anything. We need another number to express the supply/profitability of keywords. Let\\\'s use our favorite PPC engine for this step too. Go back to the main page of your favorite PPC search engine and do a search for your word. Most PPC search engines show the \\\"bid\\\" for each site next to each paid listing. Scroll down to about #10 or so and write that number down. That\\\'s going to be your supply/profitability number. At least 10 of your competitors think this word is worth more than that amount. If there is no #10 bid, I move right on. I try not to pay much attention to the bids above the #10 bid, because every market deserves to have 5-10 fools who are wasting their money because they see 5-10 other fools doing the same thing. Enough said. Oops, we only have two minutes left...
4. Determine the \\\"magic number\\\" for your word.
To get the \\\"magic number\\\" for your word, simply multiply the step 2 number by the step 3 number. That\\\'s so simple, even an IRS agent could probably understand it. Somehow the resulting number encompasses all the important marketing information for your word. Supply, demand and potential profitability indexes are all combined together into the one magic number. If you have a successful site, determine the word for it and go through the above steps for it and get its magic number also. Maybe this step took a whole minute? Never mind.
5. Compare the \\\"magic numbers\\\" and find meaning.
The magic numbers you come up with have no meaning by themselves, but you can compare them with other magic numbers derived in the same way. Now you can tell whether \\\"muffins\\\" or \\\"muffs\\\" is the better market to get into. Let\\\'s say your successful site makes you $120 profit a day. Let\\\'s say its magic number is 50. Let\\\'s say you just found another word that has a magic number of 100. With that new word with twice the magic number score you can expect to average $240 a day with a new site based on that new word, assuming that you use the same marketing techniques and put in the same amount of time as you did with the old site.
The magic number does much more than you might think. A higher magic number means that it will be easier to find free content for your site, to generate link exchanges, to find topical discussion lists and e-zines, etc. You\\\'ll also find it easier to find complementary products, profitable affiliate relationships, and to sell advertising, etc. Give it a try. Put up a couple of sites based on words with comparatively high magic numbers and you\\\'ll become a believer.
